Life-long learning in the information age - new ways for women

The development partnership Learn forever II - life-long learning in the information age - new ways for women is a project launched on the initiative of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, the Arts and Culture, funded by the European Social Fund (target 2). It was started on 1st September 2007 and will end on 31st December 2009.
The purpose of the development partnership is to provide women with little or no learning experience with access to life-long learning by way of an international knowledge transfer. To achieve this, operative partners in the Austrian States of Styria, Vienna, Salzburg, Upper Austria and Carinthia are currently developing and testing new solution-oriented approaches and models.

Women with little or no learning experience are sensitized especially to the issue of learning, while also developing their autodidactic competence in order to enable them to recognise their skills and potential and eventually use both in a targeted manner.

The models developed, piloted and implemented by Learn forever I are tested in other adult training institutions and help improving tutors' skills.

In addition, Learn forever II develops new programs for young women and women in precarious job fields.
Peripherie has been asked to accompany and evaluate all measures and actions taken.

Community of Practice (CoP) on Gender Mainstreaming

A Community of Practice (CoP) is a group of individuals who share the same concerns, problems, issues and interests regarding a certain topic and who wish to intensify and enhance their knowledge and skills by on-going communication within the group.
The purpose of the CoP on Gender Mainstreaming is to enable exchange and learning in the field of gender mainstreaming. This is done either face-to-face by peer reviews or via an internet platform that allows members from different countries to exchange their views on an on-going basis.

We invite experts and other persons implementing gender mainstreaming in the new Structural Fund period (ESF managers, Equal project leaders, information and counselling services supporting the implementation of the new program, political decisions-makers, equal treatment experts etc.) to use this platform. It offers forums for discussions, an array of gender mainstreaming products and tools, announcements of relevant events in the gender mainstreaming field, and an opportunity for discussion and networking with experts from various EU countries: www.gendermainstreaming-cop.eu

Equality in Styrian NGOs

The purpose of the project 'Steps toward equality within Styrian NGOs', an inter-institutional joint project of the NGO platform, is to launch a gender mainstreaming process within Styrian NGOs.
It enables the involved organizations to employ a future-oriented strategy, to gain a competitive edge, and to become pioneers in this field.
Peripherie developed a questionnaire that was sent out to all members of the Styrian NGO platform in order to analyse the actual situation of NGOs in terms of their gender mainstreaming strategy.
What is the future of the equal treatment issue in the third sector? Which indicators would allow us to reliably measure the equality of women and men within NGOs? These are other issues dealt with by the joint project.

Gender mainstreaming and equality of women and men in Styrian NGOs

Since Austria has committed itself to fostering gender mainstreaming in all areas of public life, it is now the turn of the NGOs to join this process. All individuals, irrespective of their gender and migration backgrounds, should participate in internal structures and processes as well as in external performances and products on an equal footing.
In the framework of 'Steps for equality within Styrian NGOs' Peripherie offers help in adjusting all processes and structures to these requirements and needs.

Project benefits

  • upgrading of the NGO image through GM,
  • improvement of the financial position of NGOs: EU grants are also awarded according to GM criteria, and both local and regional governments already receive queries concerning their gender policy
  • obvious benefits for the industry

    Project goals

Strategic goals:

  • sensitizing NGOs to equality
  • launching the gender mainstreaming process in the third sector
  • aiding NGOs in continuing their GM efforts

    Operative goals:

  • survey of the current state of implemented gender mainstreaming policies
  • development of indicators for equality in NGOs based on the current state analysis

    Problems

    1. What is the NGOs contribution to equality?
  • internally: within the staff, within structures and organisational development?
  • externally: in services/products, in customer contact
    2. Which gender-specific indicators can be developed based on the current state analysis in order to analyse internal structures and services/products of the NGOs?

The survey covered all organizations of the Styrian NGO platform.
